Nieuport Memorial

British memorial to the missing of the Battle of the Yser

A short walk from the King Albert I monument, the British Nieuport Memorial is a circular open enclosure of white stone designed by William Bryce Binnie and unveiled in 1928. It records the names of 547 British officers and men killed in the Nieuwpoort sector of the Western Front who have no known grave.

The carved stone lions at the base are by sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger, and the whole thing is unusually elegant for a memorial of this scale — it does not announce itself with grand gestures, but rewards a quiet visit. There is no admission charge and the site is always open.
