Čajna Kuća (Tea House)

The tea houses of Baščaršija are the most traditional form of the cafe culture that Ottoman Sarajevo developed over five centuries. Several survive in the old town, most of them tucked into courtyards or down narrow lanes. The format is consistent: low benches or cushioned seating, copper trays, herbal teas as well as Bosnian coffee, and a pace of life calibrated to lingering rather than throughput.

The tea house near the Gazi Husrev-beg complex is among the most atmospheric — cool and quiet even in summer, its courtyard sheltered from both sun and noise. Unlike many tourist cafes in Baščaršija that have adjusted their menus and prices for international visitors, a traditional tea house operates for its actual customers: local men playing cards or chess, students doing nothing in particular, older residents watching the courtyard in comfortable silence.
