Sarajevo has a strong cafe culture — in Baščaršija, the tradition is Bosnian coffee served in a small copper džezva, with a glass of cold water and a piece of rahat lokum (Turkish delight). This is drunk slowly, the grounds allowed to settle before pouring. It is not espresso and it is not filtered coffee; it is its own thing, and arguing about which is better is beside the point.
The bar scene is concentrated in Baščaršija in the old town, along Maršala Tita Street in the Austrian quarter, and around the Skenderija cultural centre. Prices are low by Western European standards; a beer costs 2–3 euros in most establishments.
