The city centre is compact and the main historic sites are all within walking distance of each other. The tram network covers the east-west corridor along the Miljacka River from Baščaršija through the Austro-Hungarian quarter to Ilidža and Vrelo Bosne. Trams are cheap (around 1.60 BAM per journey) and run frequently enough to be useful.
Taxis are inexpensive by European standards — a cross-city journey costs 5–10 BAM. Use the Radio Taxi or Yellow Cab apps rather than flagging from the street; metered rides are significantly cheaper than negotiated ones. The War Tunnel Museum and some other outlying sites require either a taxi or a guided tour — public transport doesn't cover them.
