Mount Trebević rises directly behind Sarajevo's old town to 1,629 metres, and a rebuilt cable car (the original was destroyed in the siege) whisks you up from the suburb of Bistrik in a few minutes. The views from the top are panoramic — the city spread below, the Miljacka valley stretching westward, and the Dinaric Alps rolling into the distance.
At the summit, the pine forests and meadows are excellent for walking in summer and skiing in winter. The ruins of the 1984 Olympic bobsled track run through the upper forest, providing one of the more surreal walking routes available — nature is slowly reclaiming the concrete. On clear autumn days, Trebević is significantly warmer than the city in the valley below (temperature inversions trap cold air downtown while the summit stays mild). The cable car operates year-round; check the schedule before going.
