White Fortress

Ruined Ottoman fortress above Sarajevo with one of the city’s best valley views

The White Fortress, or Bijela Tabija, stands above Sarajevo at the eastern end of the old defensive line. Its walls are partly ruined, but the position is superb, looking down the Miljacka valley over the old city, minarets, red roofs, and surrounding hills.

The climb or taxi ride up is worth it near sunset, when Sarajevo’s geography becomes especially clear. The fortress also gives a hard reminder of why high ground has mattered so much in the city’s history, from Ottoman defences to the violence of the 1990s.
