Church of Saints Eusebius and Polion

The Roman Catholic parish church of Vinkovci stands near the main square and is dedicated to two local martyrs from the early Christian era. The current building is a nineteenth-century Baroque-influenced structure with a distinctive twin-tower facade that defines the town's skyline.

The interior is well maintained, with carved wooden furnishings and a series of paintings depicting the lives of its patron saints. The churchyard contains several notable tombstones. Even if you don't enter, the church forms a focal point for an easy walk around the historic centre.

A story
Eusebius and Polion were Christian martyrs executed in Cibalae around 304 AD during the Diocletianic persecution. The Roman emperor Diocletian was himself connected to the Balkans — born not far from Split — and the persecution in this province was particularly fierce. The two local martyrs have given Vinkovci its patron saints and shaped its Catholic identity ever since.
