Vinkovci Synagogue Site

The second Vinkovci Synagogue, built in the early twentieth century, was one of several Jewish communal buildings that once stood in the town. The Jewish community here dated to the mid-1800s and was active in commerce and civic life. The synagogue was destroyed during the Second World War.

The site today is marked by a memorial, and visiting it gives a moment of sober reflection amid an otherwise cheerful town-centre walk. A small but significant chapter of Vinkovci's history is preserved in the memory rather than in any surviving building.

A story
The Jewish community of Vinkovci was almost entirely destroyed in the Holocaust. The synagogue was demolished, and of the roughly 350 Jews living in the town before the war, very few survived. A memorial plaque marks the site where the synagogue once stood, a reminder of a Slavonian Jewish community that had been part of the town's life since the mid-nineteenth century.
