Dokk1

Dokk1 is the main public library of Aarhus, and one of the most impressive library buildings in Europe. Opened in 2015 and designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen, it sits on the harbour at the edge of the old city on reclaimed land — a vast, angular white building that sweeps out toward the water. The interior is open and generous: high ceilings, natural light from all angles, and a ground floor that functions as a genuine public living room where people work, read, and meet throughout the day.

The building houses the city's cultural services alongside the library: a citizens' services office, a reading café, and a programme of events. The roof terrace offers good views over the harbour and the city. It's worth visiting simply for the architecture, but the library itself is one of the best-designed and most used in Denmark.
