Nykøbing Falster

Falster's main market town, known for Czarens Hus where Peter the Great stayed in 1716, and medieval St. Catherine's Church.

Nykøbing Falster is the main town on Falster and the largest settlement in the Guldborgsund municipality, sitting on the Guldborg Sound where the bridge connects the island to Lolland. It is a working market town rather than a tourist destination, but it has a compact historic centre worth an hour or two.

The most visited building is Czarens Hus (Tsar's House) on Langgade — a half-timbered townhouse where Tsar Peter the Great of Russia lodged in the winter of 1716 while studying shipbuilding in the region. The building is otherwise unassuming; the historical connection lends it its fame. The regional Falsters Minder museum on Frisegade covers the island's history from the Bronze Age onwards with a reasonable local collection.

St. Catherine's Church (Skt. Katharine Kirke) is a large Gothic brick church from the late medieval period, one of the most substantial parish churches in southern Denmark. The tower is visible from the water. The town market square (Torvet) has the typical Danish mix of civic buildings, a department store, and outdoor seating in summer.

Most visitors use Nykøbing Falster as a stop rather than a stay, passing through on the way to Marielyst or arriving on the ferry connection from Germany at Gedser.
