Bornholm has been a pottery island since the 18th century — there is white-burning clay in the south of the island and brown clay in the north — and Hjorths Fabrik is where the tradition is on display. The Hjorth family ran a stoneware works here from 1859 until 1995, and the workshop has been left almost untouched: the old kilns, the foot-treadle wheels, the moulds and the dusty shelves of seconds all in place.
A potter is usually at work in one of the rooms, and the shop sells contemporary pieces by Bornholm ceramicists alongside reproductions of classic Hjorth designs.
