Rønne is the main town and ferry port of Bornholm, the Danish island in the Baltic Sea that gets more sunshine than anywhere else in Denmark. Most visitors pass through on their way to the round churches, the coastal cliffs, and the smoked herring of Gudhjem, but Rønne itself is worth a couple of hours.
The old town has some of the best-preserved half-timbered houses in Denmark, painted in the yellows and reds typical of the island. The Bornholm Museum covers the island's long history — from the Viking era through the brief Soviet bombing of Rønne in May 1945 — and the ceramics tradition here is excellent, with Hjorths Fabrik and several studios and galleries in town. The 1823 Rønne Theater is the oldest provincial theatre in Denmark. Rønne is also where you will find most of Bornholm's restaurants and shops, making it a practical base if you want everything in one place rather than scattered across the island.
