Old Town

Half-timbered cottages painted Bornholm yellow and red, between the harbour and Store Torv

The cluster of lanes between the harbour and Store Torv — Laksegade, Storegade, Sankt Mortensgade, Bredgade — is what most people come to Rønne to see. The cottages are tiny, low and crooked, painted in mustard yellow and rust red with white timbers, and packed with hollyhocks against the walls in summer. The pattern is the same Bornholm vernacular that you will see in Svaneke and Gudhjem, but Rønne has more of it concentrated in one place.

It is best walked slowly with no particular destination. Stop at the small ceramicists' shops as you pass — the island has more potters per capita than anywhere else in Denmark and most of the good ones have a studio or outlet in town.

A story
Many of the prettiest houses in central Rønne are actually post-war reconstructions: the Soviet bombing in May 1945 destroyed or damaged more than 200 houses, and the rebuilding deliberately followed the old half-timbered style street by street.
