Imatra

South Karelian border city built around the famous Vuoksi rapids and Lake Saimaa.

Imatra is a South Karelian city where the Vuoksi River drops out of Lake Saimaa in a roar of rock, water, and old tourist memory. The town is industrial in parts and close to the Russian border, but its fame comes from Imatrankoski Rapids, a sight that drew aristocrats, artists, and ordinary Finnish holidaymakers long before modern tourism had a name.

The rapids no longer run freely all day; hydroelectric works changed that in the 20th century. When the gates open for scheduled shows, the old drama returns, and the surrounding Kruununpuisto makes the setting worth seeing even between releases.

Imatra pairs well with Lappeenranta and the wider Lakeland. Come for the rapids, but leave time for the castle-like Valtionhotelli, Alvar Aalto's Church of the Three Crosses, and a walk along the Vuoksi.
