Saint-Bon-Tarentaise

Saint-Bon is the original village in the valley, the medieval settlement that existed long before anyone thought of building a ski resort above it. It sits at around 1,100 metres, below all the resort levels, on the road that climbs up from Moûtiers. The old church with its onion-domed spire is typical of Savoyard mountain architecture.

A short stop on the way up or down. The village retains a quiet, lived-in feel that the upper resort villages cannot match — a useful reminder that the Tarentaise valley has been inhabited for centuries before the ski lifts arrived.
