Schweinfurt

Franconian Main River town with market squares, riverside walks, and the Georg Schäfer art museum.

Schweinfurt sits directly on the Main River between Bamberg and Würzburg — a compact town of cobblestone streets and market squares that rewards a few hours of wandering. The focal point is the Marktplatz and its surrounding blocks, where fruit and vegetable stalls set up daily and festivals fill the calendar through the year.

The Georg Schäfer Museum, a couple of blocks south of the Markt, is worth a visit — not just for the 19th-century German art collection but for the contemporary building itself. The Main River Promenade offers boat trips for around €15 and is a favourite local walking route. Many locals speak good English, in part a legacy of the US Army base that was once stationed north of town.

Getting There

Schweinfurt has two train stations but neither is a main hub — the Hauptbahnhof (main station) is south of the city centre and requires a short bus connection. Trains run from Würzburg (about 40 minutes) and from Bamberg via Haßfurt. Change at Würzburg for connections from Frankfurt or Munich.

By car, Schweinfurt is on the A70 autobahn and straightforward to reach from both directions. Parking in the town centre is available in several garages near the market square. The town is small enough that a car is not necessary once you've arrived.

Things to Do

Schweinfurt is a compact Franconian town on the Main River with a good art museum, a well-preserved market square, and a few hours of walkable old town. The Georg Schäfer Museum is the main cultural draw. For longer stays, Würzburg (30 km south) and Bamberg (40 km east) are both easy day trips and more substantial destinations, but Schweinfurt rewards a half-day of its own exploration.
