Thurnau is a small town in Upper Franconia, midway between Bayreuth and Bamberg along the A70. It is best known for its castle complex, one of the largest in Franconia, which has been gradually restored and now houses a branch of the University of Bayreuth.
The town also has a long tradition of pottery — Thurnauer Töpferei has been produced here for centuries, and the local pottery museum documents the craft. The old town centre is compact and well-preserved, with half-timbered houses and a quiet market square.
Thurnau makes a pleasant stop if you are driving between Bayreuth and Bamberg, but most visitors will not need more than an hour or two.
