Wendish Quarter

Historic Sorbian enclave in the city centre, bilingual street signs throughout

The Wendish Quarter, or Sorbisches Viertel, is the historic neighbourhood in the northern part of Cottbus's city centre where the Sorbian community has been concentrated for centuries. The streets are signed in both German and Lower Sorbian, and the neighbourhood retains a distinct character from the rest of the city.

Walking through the area you will notice the bilingual signage, the Sorbian cultural organisations, and the Lower Sorbian Gymnasium school where the language is taught and used as the medium of instruction. The quarter is a living example of minority culture in contemporary Germany rather than a heritage exhibit — people actually live here and speak Sorbian as a daily language.
