Walsrode

Luneberg Heath town known for a world-class bird park and old heathland museums.

Walsrode is a small town on the Luneberg Heath, roughly between Hannover, Bremen, and Hamburg. The centre is pleasant enough, with an old abbey quarter and a local museum, but the reason travellers notice the name is Weltvogelpark Walsrode, one of Europe's great bird parks.

The town works best as a practical base for a family or nature-minded day in the heath. The bird park is the anchor, but the Rischmannshof Heath Museum and Walsrode Abbey add enough local texture that the place does not feel like a single-attraction stop.

Walsrode is also close to the wider amusement-and-animal-park belt of the southern heath. Serengeti Park at Hodenhagen is just outside town and is a major day out, especially with children. If you are already in Lower Saxony with a spare day, Walsrode is more rewarding than its modest centre suggests.
