A simple memorial at the gates of the Volkswagen factory marks the site of the Arbeitsdorf concentration camp, a forced-labour subcamp of Neuengamme that operated inside the plant during 1942. The original camp was demolished long ago; the memorial plaque and a small documentation centre run by VW are the main physical traces.
A visit pairs naturally with a Volkswagen plant tour. The company has been unusually direct in its handling of this history — the AutoMuseum and the Erinnerungsstätte (memorial centre) in the south wing of the factory together provide one of the more thorough corporate confrontations of its Nazi past in any German city.
