Autostadt

Volkswagen's corporate visitor park — car museum, brand pavilions, and the famous delivery towers

The Autostadt is the public face of Volkswagen, a 28-hectare park beside the main plant that is part car museum, part corporate showcase, part theme park. Each Volkswagen Group brand — VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley — has its own pavilion with concept cars, displays, and varying degrees of design pretension.

The standout feature is the pair of glass delivery towers, where new VWs wait to be handed over to their customers via a robotic carousel. The ZeitHaus museum is the historical core, with one of the great collections of significant twentieth-century cars from across all manufacturers. Allow most of a day; a multi-day pass exists and is worth it if you have any interest in cars or design.

A story
The two glass delivery towers each hold up to 400 new cars, stacked vertically on a robotic carousel. When a customer arrives to collect a vehicle, the appropriate car descends from the tower onto a turntable in the showroom — a piece of choreographed industrial theatre that is the closest thing in Europe to a sacred ritual of mass production.
