Schloss Wolfsburg is the medieval moated castle from which the twentieth-century city took its name. It was first mentioned in 1302 and was rebuilt in the seventeenth century as a Renaissance Schloss; a wide square moat, a four-winged courtyard, and a corner tower still survive.
The castle is now a municipal cultural centre with several museums and galleries inside: a city history museum, an art exhibition space, and rotating shows. The grounds and outer courtyards are free to wander and give a slightly disorienting glimpse of the rural pre-1938 landscape, just a short walk from the Autostadt.
