The AutoMuseum Volkswagen, sometimes called the Stiftung AutoMuseum, is the lower-profile companion to the showier Autostadt. It is essentially a working archive of the Volkswagen brand: row after row of Beetles in every imaginable variant, Kombi vans, Karmann Ghias, military Kübelwagen, futurist prototypes that never reached production, and the occasional foreign curiosity that the company has acquired.
For anyone with even a casual interest in Volkswagen the museum is more interesting than the Autostadt: it is denser, less polished, and far less crowded. It is on a side street about a kilometre east of the main complex; allow ninety minutes.
