Volkswagen Wolfsburg Plant Tour

Guided tour of Volkswagen's vast main factory beside the Mittelland Canal

Volkswagen runs scheduled guided tours of the main plant, including the press shop, the body assembly hall, and the final line where Golfs, Tiguans, and Touareg ID.3s come together. The tour lasts about two hours and is conducted on foot and by electric bus through the gigantic halls.

You need to book in advance and bring photo ID; flat closed shoes are required. The tour is genuinely impressive — far more so than the Autostadt — and is the best way to understand what Wolfsburg actually is. Tours are run in German and English on most weekdays.

A story
The plant covers more than 6.5 square kilometres — bigger than the Principality of Monaco — and employs around 60,000 people. It is the largest car factory in Europe, fed by a private railway and its own port on the Mittelland Canal.
