Deutsches Eck

The most photographed spot in the Middle Rhine: the sharp triangular headland where the green Moselle pours into the larger Rhine. The point itself is a vast cobbled platform with a 14-metre equestrian statue of Wilhelm I at the apex, all flagpoles and German tricolours, and it is the natural starting point for any walk in Koblenz.

Climb the plinth for the view across both rivers and up to Ehrenbreitstein. The promenades along both rivers extend in either direction — left along the Moselle to the medieval Baldwin Bridge, right along the Rhine to the Electoral Palace.

A story
The colossal equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I that stands on the headland today is a 1993 replica — the original was destroyed by an American shell in March 1945. For nearly fifty years the Federal Republic left the empty plinth alone as a 'monument to German unity'. A local industrialist paid for the replica after reunification.
