Schängelbrunnen

A small fountain in the courtyard of the old town hall on the Florinsmarkt featuring a bronze boy who spits a stream of water at random intervals. The locals know the rhythm; visitors usually take a face-full before they understand the joke.

It is one of the more loved monuments in Koblenz and the symbol of the city, more than the imperial statue at the Deutsches Eck. Stop in the courtyard for a minute and watch — there is no fixed schedule, but the spit happens roughly every couple of minutes.

A story
The 'Schängel' is the nickname for a native Koblenzer — a small-town brat — and dates from the French occupation of the early 1800s, when locally born children with French given names like Jean were nicknamed 'Schang'. The bronze boy in the fountain stands for the whole tribe.
