A neo-Gothic castle on a wooded hill above the Rhine, five kilometres south of central Koblenz. The original thirteenth-century stronghold was a ruin until the city of Koblenz gave it to Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1823; he rebuilt it in the Romantic style as a summer residence with the help of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
The interior, with its medievalist murals and Schinkel-designed furniture, is one of the best surviving expressions of nineteenth-century German Romanticism. Bus 650 from the centre stops at the bottom of the hill. Combine with a walk in the surrounding park.
