Mittelrhein-Museum

The municipal museum of Koblenz, in the modern Forum Confluentes building on Zentralplatz. The permanent collection runs from Roman archaeology through medieval altarpieces, Dutch and Flemish painting, and an unusually strong nineteenth-century Romantic Rhine-landscape room: William Turner, Caspar Scheuren, Christian Georg Schütz and others all gave the gorge its mythic shape on canvas.

The temporary exhibition programme is also strong, with regular shows on contemporary Rhineland artists. Useful for a rainy afternoon and a corrective to the impression that Koblenz is only about the rivers.
