Liebfrauenkirche

14th-century Gothic church that gave its name to Liebfraumilch

A graceful twin-spired Gothic church standing alone in the middle of vineyards north of the city centre. Begun in 1276, finished in the 15th century, the church is the spiritual home of one of the most famous wine names in the world.

The vineyard immediately behind the church — Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück — is the original "Liebfraumilch" plot. The church itself is a quiet, atmospheric stop; a small chapel inside holds a 15th-century devotional Madonna. Combine with a vineyard walk and a tasting at one of the Worms wine estates.

A story
The vineyard behind the church gave its name to Liebfraumilch — "Beloved Lady's milk" — once the reputation-defining export wine of Germany, now mostly a mass-market sweet white. Genuine estate-bottled wine from the Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück vineyard is still produced, and bears little resemblance to the supermarket version.
