Magnuskirche

Small Romanesque-Gothic church and the first Lutheran church in southern Germany

A small, atmospheric church a short walk south of the cathedral. The shell dates from the 11th and 13th centuries — a Romanesque nave, a Gothic choir, and a single squat tower — and it has the historical distinction of having been the first church south of Wittenberg to introduce a fully Lutheran service, in 1521, in the immediate wake of Luther's Worms appearance.

The interior is small and plain. A 14th-century crucifix above the altar is the principal medieval survival. Free entry; worth ten minutes when walking between the cathedral and the museum.
