Dresden's Neue Synagoge stands on the site of the Semper Synagogue, which was destroyed during the Nazi pogroms of November 1938. The present building, completed in 2001, is deliberately modern rather than a reconstruction.
Its rough concrete walls refer to Dresden sandstone, while the tilted, austere form gives the building a quiet force. It is one of the more meaningful modern buildings in the old city centre.
