Pfunds Molkerei

The world's most beautiful dairy shop — every surface tiled in hand-painted Villeroy & Boch

Pfunds Molkerei is a corner shop in Dresden's Neustadt district that happens to be one of the most visually extraordinary interiors in Germany. Every surface — the floor, the walls to the ceiling, the counter, the pillars — is covered in hand-painted ceramic tiles from the Villeroy & Boch factory, in a dense neo-Renaissance pattern of fruits, animals, and ornamental cartouches in cream, cobalt, and terracotta.

Paul Pfund opened the shop in 1891 as a high-end dairy, importing Dutch cattle and selling to Dresden's well-heeled population. He invested in the tiles as a statement of quality and permanence. The gamble paid off: the shop survived the upheavals of the 20th century intact, the tiles undamaged and unchipped even through the bombing that destroyed much of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Under the GDR the shop continued trading, and after reunification the Pfund family expanded into tourism without much disrupting the dairy function. The shop still sells cheese, butter, and Quark — you can buy something and eat it leaning against one of the tiled pillars.

Pfunds is in the Äußere Neustadt, Dresden's alternative quarter, about a fifteen-minute walk north from the Frauenkirche across the Elbe. It's easy to combine with the Kunsthofpassage, which is a few streets west.

A story
Paul Pfund opened his dairy shop in 1891 and clad every surface — walls, floor, ceiling, and counter — in hand-painted neo-Renaissance tiles from Villeroy & Boch. The shop sold dairy products through two world wars, the GDR, and reunification without the tiles being touched. In 1998, the Guinness Book of Records certified it as the world's most beautiful dairy shop. It still sells cheese.
