Archaeological Museum of Arta

The Archaeological Museum of Arta sits in a modern building on the southern edge of the town, near the old hospital, and brings together finds from ancient Ambracia and other sites in the regional unit. It is small but well organised, with English captions and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that mainland Greek museums outside the main tourist circuit often have.

The collection runs from prehistoric pottery through Hellenistic grave goods to Roman portrait sculpture and Byzantine architectural fragments. The highlights are the funerary stelae from the Hellenistic necropolis of Ambracia, several of them painted, and an unusually fine collection of small bronzes. Allow an hour. Combine the visit with a walk down to the Bridge of Arta, which is on the same side of the river.
