The archaeological museum in Vathy is in two buildings either side of a small garden. The new wing, purpose-built to fit the giant kouros of Samos, is dominated by that one statue: 5.5 metres of marble youth with one foot forward, looking past you to the rear wall. It is impossible to take in from close up.
The older building holds finds from the Heraion sanctuary: hundreds of bronze offerings, including some of the earliest representations of cavalry horses in Greek art, ivory figurines from Egypt and the Levant, and a fine collection of archaic pottery. The collection makes more sense of the ruins at the Heraion site itself; visit here first if you can.
