Manolates

A village of red-roofed houses cling to the steep northern slope of Mount Ampelos, with a single car-free lane winding up past tavernas, ceramic workshops, and small artisan shops. It is one of the prettiest of the inland villages and a popular target for half-day drives from Kokkari.

The marked path that descends from Manolates back to the north-coast village of Stavrinides and on to Aidonia (the "valley of nightingales") is one of the best short hikes on the island — about two hours downhill through chestnut and pine forest, with views across the Aegean to Turkey.
