János Xántus Zoo is Győr's main family attraction, with hundreds of animals in enclosures that try to echo their natural habitats. The African mammal collection is a particular strength, and the terrarium has one of Hungary's larger collections of venomous snakes, along with dwarf crocodiles.
It sits outside the old centre, so treat it as a half-day outing rather than something to tack onto a quick walk around the Baroque streets. It is most useful if you are travelling with children or want a slower day between churches and museums.
