Maria Column

The Maria Column is a small but handsome Baroque monument in the historic centre of Gyor. It was raised in 1686 to mark the recapture of Buda from Ottoman rule, with the Virgin Mary above statues of Saint Stephen, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Leopold.

You will probably pass it while exploring the old town rather than make a special trip for it. Pause for a closer look: the column is a good example of the Catholic victory monuments that still give many central European squares their tone.
