The main municipal museum of Győr occupies a handsome Baroque palace near the cathedral and covers the city's history from the Roman period — when this was the legionary fort of Arrabona — through to the modern era. The Roman collection on the ground floor is the strongest part: mosaic floors, carved stones, and everyday objects from the garrison town.
The upper floors deal with the medieval town, the Ottoman siege period, and the Baroque rebuilding that gave Győr its current character. Labels are in Hungarian and English. The museum is quiet on weekday mornings, which makes it a good place to get context before exploring the streets outside.
