Jurisics tér (Main Square)

Jurisics tér is the heart of Kőszeg's old town, one of the most harmonious medieval squares in Hungary. Ringed by baroque and Renaissance townhouses in shades of yellow, ochre, and pale terracotta, it has survived largely intact since the 17th and 18th centuries. The square is pedestrianised and unhurried — a few cafe tables, some benches, and the occasional tourist, but nothing like the crowds that fill comparable squares in Sopron or Győr.

The square is named after Nikola Jurišić, the Croatian-Hungarian captain who led the 1532 defence of the castle. His statue stands in the square. The two churches that bookend the square — the Church of the Sacred Heart at the east end and St James's Church to the west — both date from the medieval period, heavily remodelled in the baroque era. At 11am daily, the bells of both churches ring together in commemoration of the 1532 siege.
