Carmelite Church

The Carmelite Church (Karmelita templom) on Petőfi utca is a small baroque church easily missed from outside but worth stepping into. The interior is unusually theatrical for a small parish church, with fresco cycles by Caspar Franz Sambach covering the ceiling and side walls — biblical scenes painted in trompe-l'œil to extend the architecture.

The Carmelites established themselves here in the 18th century and the church was completed in 1769. It is still in regular use, and the choir loft and the side chapels can usually be visited outside service hours.
