The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Stephen, often just called the cathedral, is the working church at the heart of the modern diocese. It stands on the site of an earlier medieval church, but the current building is largely baroque, rebuilt in the mid-18th century with a pair of square towers above the west front. The interior is bright and theatrical — pink marble, gilded altars, and a high ceiling fresco.
It is the easier of the two basilica sites to visit, since it is open most days and free to enter. Combine it with a stop at the medieval ruin garden, two minutes' walk away, to get the full sense of what Székesfehérvár was and what it became.
