The old town of Székesfehérvár is small and walkable, and almost everything worth seeing sits inside a fifteen-minute radius around Városház tér, the main square. The medieval royal basilica — once one of the largest churches in central Europe and the coronation site for thirty-seven Hungarian kings — is now an open archaeological garden right in the centre, and the surrounding streets are lined with baroque townhouses, painted ceilings, and a clutch of small but well-curated museums.
Allow half a day for the centre, longer if you want to take in Bory Castle on the eastern edge of the city or the lakeside parks at Csitári-hegyek and Sóstó.
