Douglas Railway Station

Douglas Railway Station is the terminus of the Isle of Man Railway, the 3-foot narrow-gauge steam railway that runs south to Port Erin. The station building is Victorian and the atmosphere of the departure platform — steam billowing from old locomotives, wooden carriages with original fittings, unhurried timetables — feels genuinely unchanged from the 1890s. From here you can also connect to the horse-drawn trams along the promenade.

The journey to Port Erin takes about 55 minutes and is one of the best ways to see the southern part of the island, passing through Castletown (the island's ancient capital) and Ballasalla before reaching the coast. The Manx Electric Railway, heading north to Ramsey, departs from a separate terminus on the northern end of the promenade.

A story
The Isle of Man Railway is one of the few surviving narrow-gauge steam railways in the British Isles that operates as a working transport service rather than a tourist attraction alone. The steam locomotives and rolling stock date mostly from the 1870s and 1880s, and the line from Douglas to Port Erin runs through some of the most scenic parts of the island.
