TT Mountain Course

The Isle of Man TT Mountain Course is the most famous and dangerous motorcycle race in the world, run on the island's public roads every June. The course covers 37.73 miles per lap through towns, villages, farmland and up over the treeless mountain plateau, and the roads are closed to normal traffic during practice and race weeks. Douglas is the start and finish point, with the pits located on Glencrutchery Road.

Even outside TT season, you can drive, cycle or walk sections of the course — following the Marshals' notes online and the roadside kilometre markers. The flat approach through the town itself leads up through Braddan and Union Mills before the course begins to climb. For motorcyclists, the experience of driving the course at legal speeds on an otherwise normal road is extraordinary; for anyone interested in motorsport history, a lap in a hire car is well worth the time.

A story
The Isle of Man TT has no speed limit on public roads during race week — competitors have been recorded at speeds above 320 km/h through the village of Ballaugh on the road-legal circuit. The course record, set in 2018, stands at an average speed of 135.452 mph (217.989 km/h) for the full 37.73-mile lap — a jaw-dropping number for a course that includes sharp corners, stone walls, and jumps.
