The Old Fairy Bridge is a small stone crossing over the Silverburn River on the road south from Douglas, and Manx tradition holds that anyone who crosses without saying "hello to the fairies" risks bad luck. The island has a rich fairy folklore tradition — the Manx call fairies the "little folk" or mooinjer veggey — and the superstition around the bridge is widely observed, even if only half-jokingly.
Children tie ribbons, leave coins and small gifts on the bridge, and locals do actually mutter a greeting as they cross. The bridge is not far from the airport and is sometimes the first or last cultural encounter visitors have with the island. It's a small thing but very Manx.
