Piazza Salotto

Piazza della Rinascita — universally known as Piazza Salotto ("Living Room Square") — is the social centre of Pescara and the nearest thing the city has to a grand piazza. It is flanked by the town hall and surrounded by cafés, and in the evening it fills with people doing the passeggiata along the adjoining Corso Umberto I. The square was redesigned in the 1990s and is not architecturally distinguished, but it functions well as a gathering place.

The surrounding streets make up the best of what Pescara has for strolling: the pedestrianised section of Corso Umberto I has shops, bars, and gelaterie, and connects the square to the beach. On summer evenings the whole stretch from the square to the seafront is busy with people of all ages — families, teenagers, elderly couples — in the distinctly Italian tradition of communal evening walking.
