Pescara is the best-connected city in Abruzzo and a practical base for the region. The medieval hill town of Chieti is 15 km inland. Sulmona, famous for its confetti (sugar-coated almonds) and set in a mountain basin, takes about an hour by road. The Gran Sasso massif and L'Aquila, rebuilt after its 2009 earthquake, are roughly an hour by car. Pescasseroli in the heart of the national park is about 1.5 hours.
