Janiculum Hill

Best panoramic view of Rome, with a daily noon cannon

Address Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, 00152 Rome
Admission Free

The highest point within the historic city of Rome, offering a sweeping 180-degree panorama over the rooftops, domes, and towers of the centro storico — St. Peter's dome, the Vittoriano, Palazzo Venezia, and the distant Alban Hills all visible on a clear day. A cannon is fired from here every day at noon, a tradition dating to 1847.

Reached on foot from Trastevere (a steep 20-minute climb) or by bus. The Fontana dell'Acqua Paola — a massive 17th-century fountain — is at the top. Come for sunset if you can; the light on the city from this height is exceptional.
