Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of Rome's great medieval churches, standing on the neighborhood's main square. The interior mixes ancient columns with a richly decorated apse, and its golden mosaics are among the main reasons to visit.
The church is especially atmospheric after dark, when the facade and piazza are lit and Trastevere is at its busiest. Step inside even if you are only passing through the square.
