Piazza della Repubblica

Baroque main square of the old town, dominated by the cathedral

The Piazza della Repubblica is the heart of old Marsala — a small, harmonious square paved in pale stone and closed at the north end by the cathedral. On the west side stands the Palazzo VII Aprile, a 17th-century town hall whose name commemorates a riot of 1860 that helped pave the way for Garibaldi's landing.

The square is a continual meeting point in the evening: cafés on the south side, locals trading news, kids on bikes circling the cathedral steps. Sitting here for an hour is a more accurate introduction to Marsala than any of the formal sights.
